The inhabitants
One morning, the villagers of Birck opened their windows a crack or stood in their doorways without venturing any further, for it was raining; and they called out to one another from window to window and from door to door for it was raining and this rain was red. Not a light red, like vermilion for example, but nonetheless a distinctly burgundy red, or even darker, oxblood. And their faces showed surprise or concern, and in some of the older residents, even terror or resignation. Very few went outside, armed with an umbrella. Some steps, and back, and they looked at each other, wondering what to do, but to that, there was no answer.
